Supreme Court Justice Elana Kagan over
the weekend officiated for the first time at the wedding of a gay
couple.
According to the AP, Kagan presided
over the wedding of Mitchell Reich, a former Kagan law clerk, and
Patrick Pearsall.
A New York Times wedding
announcement lists Reich as a 27-year-old Justice Department lawyer
and Pearsall as a 34-year-old State Department lawyer.
The couple exchanged vows at Wooden
Sanctuary in the Washington suburb of Chevy Chase, Maryland. A law
approved by lawmakers allowing gay couples to marry took effect on
January 1, 2013 after winning approval from Maryland voters.
While it was the first such wedding for
Kagan, retired Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Justice Ruth Bader
Ginsburg have previously married gay couples.
Earlier
this month, Ginsburg officiated over the wedding of Danny Rubens,
a former Ginsburg law clerk, and Danny Grossman in New York.
