Michael C. Hall will replace Andrew Rannells in the Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

According to The New York Times, Hall, who is best known for playing serial killer Dexter Morgan for eight season on Showtime's Dexter, will take over the lead role when Rannells' (Book of Mormon, Girls) limited eight-week engagement ends in mid-October.

Hedwig, which had a long off-Broadway run at New York City's Jane Street Theater and was later turned into a movie in 2001 starring John Cameron Mitchell in the title role, tells the story of a transgender rock musician's search for “my other half.”

The Broadway staging took home four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Actor in a Musical for Neil Patrick Harris, who departed in mid-August.

Hall's Broadway resume includes playing the M.C. in Cabaret and Billy Flynn in Chicago. Most recently he starred in The Realistic Joneses. In television, Hall played gay funeral home owner David Fisher for five seasons on the HBO drama Six Feet Under.
