Illinois Representative Brad Schneider on Thursday released a campaign ad which includes his support for marriage equality.

In the 30-second ad, titled Together, Schneider explains what being a Democrat means to him.

“Here's the thing,” Schneider says in the ad. “To me, being a Democrat means we can't let 'We the People' turn into 'We the Few.' It means tea party obstruction has to stop. Being a Democrat means we should lower the tax burden on the middle class.”

“It means we have to protect a woman's right to choose and every person's right to choose whom to marry.”

“I'm Brad Schneider and I approve this message because we're all in this together, accountable to each other. We can still accomplish great things,” he adds. (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)

A law allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry in Illinois went into effect on June 1, though several counties began issuing marriage licenses to gay couples months before the law's official start.

Schneider applauded the law's start.

Former Republican Congressman Robert Dold, an opponent of marriage equality, is vying to replace Schneider and regain his old seat back.
