UK's the BBC has commissioned the
nation's first transgender comedy series.
Boy Meets Girl looks at the
developing relationship between 26-year-old Leo and 40-year-old Judy.
Judy, who is transgender, is played by
Rebecca Root, a transgender actor, in the show's pilot, according to
The
Independent.
The script by Elliott Kerrigan was
discovered through the BBC's talent search titled the Trans Comedy
Award held last year.
The BBC confirmed that a trans actor
will play the role of Judy in the full series.
“Trans people are a minority,” Root
said in May. But for every person like me who's made a conscious
step do to something about the feeling we've had all our lives, there
are plenty who've gone part-way or not at all yet.”
Root added that the public is ready to
see transgender characters on television.
