Christian conservative Bryan Fischer on
Monday asserted that gay people are “not qualified to hold public
office.”
Fischer made the claim in response to
the indictment of Texas Governor Rick Perry, a Republican. Perry was
indicted by a grand jury on Friday over his efforts to force Travis
County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg to resign from office.
After Lehmberg refused to resign over an arrest for drunk driving,
Perry vetoed $7.5 million in state funding to a government agency run
by Lehmberg's office that, among other things, investigates
accusations of corruption by elected officials.
Lehmberg is openly gay.
“My view of public service,”
Fischer
told his radio audience, “is that somebody who is engaged in
sexually deviant behavior is not qualified to hold public office.”
“That's why if you get a conviction
for rape, you can't hold public office. You get a conviction for
pedophilia, you can't hold public office. You might even get run out
of office on a prostitution charge because it's sexually deviant
behavior. Now lesbianism is sexually deviant behavior because it
deviates from God's plan and design for human sexually. So I believe
that this is a person who, because she's involved in sexually deviant
behavior, should be, ought to be disqualified from public service”
