In the same week that she announced
she's gay, Christian rock star Vicky Beeching, 35, also went on live
television to debate Scott Lively, a leading anti-gay activist and
independent Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate.
Beeching, who is also pursuing a PhD on
“religion and technology,” told The Independent that she
feels “certain God loves me just the way I am.”
Appearing via satellite on Britain's
Channel 4, Lively said he had a lot of sympathy for gay people,
explaining that his sister turned to him “when lesbianism had
almost destroyed her. He said she “became a Christian and overcame
lesbianism.”
“I'm very sorry to hear that
[Beeching] has given in to the lie that she is a homosexual instead
of continuing to try to overcome the challenge that is in her life,”
Lively said.
Beeching rejected Lively's assertion
that she has given “in to the lie,” saying, “It's about coming
to terms with who you are and realizing we need to accept our sexual
orientation as a God-given gift, rather than making it seem like it's
a battle between who you're made to be and who you are.”
After stating that “there is no such
thing as a gay person,” Lively told Beeching that she is placing
too much faith in psychology, rather than religious doctrine.
“So psychology for you does not
reflect God's intellect in us as humans?” she fired back. “Because
I would say that actually psychology is part of what it means to be
human. … To have a brain and to be intelligent. And God gave us
that ability.”
“Don't you care what God thinks of
you, Vicky?” Lively asked.
“I do,” she answered. “And
that's actually why I'm taking this step today – so that young
people don't have to listen to the kind of teaching that you peddle,
because it damages.”
