A bill introduced in Kenya proposes
stoning gays to death under certain circumstances.
According to the African
Seer, the bill is sponsored by the Republican Liberty Party and
is currently before a National Assembly committee.
The bill outlines death by public
stoning for any foreigner found guilty of gay sex. Locals found
guilty of “aggravated homosexuality” – repeat offenders –
would also be stoned to death in public. A Kenyan found guilty of
having consensual sex with a person of the same sex for the first
time would receive a sentence of life in prison.
Lawmakers behind the bill said it was
needed to protect children.
“There is [a] need to protect
children and youth who are vulnerable to sexual abuse and deviation
as a result of cultural changes, uncensored information technology,
parentless child developmental settings and increasing attempts by
homosexuals to raise children in homosexual relationship through
adoption, foster care or otherwise,” the petitioner is quoted as
stating.
“The petition aims at providing a
comprehensive and enhanced legislation to protect the cherished
culture of the people of Kenya, legal, religious and traditional
family values against the attempts of sexual rights activists seeking
to impose their values of sexual promiscuity on the people of Kenya.”
Earlier this month, a harsh anti-gay
law approved by lawmakers in neighboring Uganda was struck down on
technical grounds.
