Appearing on HBO's Real Time, out actor George Takei strongly suggested that Star Trek co-star William Shatner was oblivious to his sexuality.

Takei, who is best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek, told host Bill Maher that he didn't get along with Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, and is Canadian.

“Canadians have a certain image of being even-tempered and friendly and all that,” Takei said. “Well, [Shatner] is a person who is that way with himself. He is very self-centered.”

When Maher said that he wouldn't “drive the ship into a death star just to spite him,” Takei joked that the temptation was there.

Takei added that the entire cast knew he was gay with the exception of one member.

“It went right over his head,” Takei said.

“You showed up with Liberace. Bill Shatner was clueless,” Maher joked. (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)
