Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans
for Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH), has called for the
imprisonment of doctors who perform sex reassignment surgeries for
transgender people.
During a Friday radio appearance on The
Janet Mefferd Show, LaBarbera described the surgeries as
“grotesque” and stated that the doctors performing them were
“exploiting” and profiting from “gender confused individuals.”
“These doctors who perform these
operations – this should be illegal – these guys need to go to
jail,” LaBarbera
said. “This is almost the most analogous thing to the
abortionist on that issue I can think of. These doctors [are]
exploiting these gender confused individuals and making money off of
them.”
LaBarbera also praised the Supreme
Court's decision in the Hobby Lobby case – which
has led to the unraveling of support for the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) – then criticized the court for
its potential involvement in advancing marriage equality.
“We cannot be ruled by nine men and
women in robes, by the Supreme Court, they are not supposed to be
making law,” he said.
“I think we need a state like
Oklahoma or somewhere where there is a vast, vast majority supporting
traditional marriage to say, 'No, we're not going to be forced in our
state to embrace this counterfeit marriage,' and I hope that
happens,” LaBarbera added.
Of course, LaBarbera's rallying cry
against marriage equality in his own backyard of Illinois was
ineffective at blocking lawmakers from approving such a law.
