Cities large and small are celebrating
Gay Pride this weekend.
Two of the nation's oldest and largest
festivals were being held Sunday in San Francisco and New York.
Organizers behind Chicago's parade expect attendance to topple 1
million.
New York's celebration marks the 45th
anniversary of the Stonewall Inn riots, which are credited with
launching the modern gay right movement. (A live feed from the
annual NYC Price March is embedded on this page.)
Organizers in San Francisco are hosting
the city's 44th annual celebration.
Events are also taking place this
weekend in France, Spain, Mexico, Bolivia and Peru.
In the U.S., revelers are celebrating
the one year anniversary of two Supreme Court decisions which opened
the door for gay weddings to resume in California and led to the
federal government's recognition of the legal marriages of gay and
lesbian couples.
In the year that followed, 22 state and
federal courts have sided with gay couples challenging state marriage
laws and constitutional amendments which limit marriage to
heterosexual couples, many citing the high court's rulings.
