At Thursday's Critics Choice Television
Awards, HBO's AIDS drama The Normal Heart won the best picture
prize, while Matt Bomer took home the best supporting actor award for
his role in the film.
Also nominated in the Best Supporting
Actor in a Movie or Miniseries category were Warren Brown for his
role in Luther (BBC America), Martin Freeman for Sherlock:
His Last Vow (PBS), Colin Hanks for Fargo (FX), Joe
Mantello for The Normal Heart (HBO) and Blair Underwood for
The Trip to Bountiful (Lifetime).
When announced as the winner, Bomer and
husband Simon Halls stood up and shared a kiss and a hug.
In his acceptance speech, Bomer thanked
director Ryan Murphy and playwright Larry Kramer, who wrote the 1985
play the movie is based on.
“Thank you Larry Kramer for standing
up at a time when it was not popular or easy to do so. In speaking
out, we owe you more than I can ever communicate in this speech,”
Bomer said.
“To the generation that we lost, I
just want to say that we remember you and we honor you. This is for
you,” he added, a reference to the people lost to the AIDS
