Fort Lauderdale, Florida Commissioners
on Tuesday approved a non-binding resolution in support of marriage
According to the South
the measure, sponsored by openly gay Commissioner Dean Trantalis, was
approved with a 3-2 vote.
“If we're truly going to be an
All-American city, we have to be a city for all Americans,”
Fort Lauderdale, along with surrounding
cities Oakland Park and Wilton Manors, has a large LGBT community and
is a popular vacation spot for gay men and lesbians.
Resident Jordan Pearl was one of the
few to testify against the resolution.
“You're mocking the beliefs of the
religious community. You're mocking the Bible,” Pearl said.
“You're saying that God, Moses and Jesus are wrong.”
Mayor Jack Seiler and Vice Mayor Romney
Rogers voted against the resolution. Rogers said he “favors
equality” but believes marriage “is a sacred covenant.”
