Luigi De Magistris, the mayor of
Naples, Italy, has signaled his willingness to register the foreign
marriages of gay and lesbian couples.
The news, provided by the blog Agere
per Formulas, comes after Fano on Friday became the first Italian
town to register the marriage of a gay couple without a court order.

Flavio Romani, the president of
Arcigay, Italy's largest LGBT rights advocate, applauded the move.
“This is the difference between those
who simply preach rights and those who put them into practice with
concrete actions that have real impact on people's lives,” Romani
said. “The mayors of Naples and Fano rely on the sense of justice
repeatedly invoked by the High Courts, and implement a practice not
only right but necessary.”
Romani encouraged all mayors to follow
de Magistris' example.
Since 2012, Naples has offered a
gay-inclusive civil union registry.
