Bill Maher has credited television for
increasing support for marriage equality.
Politicking host Larry King
asked Maher his opinion on the dramatic shift.
“Are you shocked, as many are, by how
quickly the gay issue has changed in this country? More Americans
favor same-sex marriage, a football player is drafted and kisses his
partner on television, okay. How did that happen so quickly?” King
asked.
“The gays insisted,” Maher
responded.
“But it is amazing that it was only
maybe 20 years ago that the closest thing to a gay marriage was Liza
Minnelli and David Guest,” he joked.
“And the other thing I think that turned
it around is television. You know, people don't really read the
news, they don't pay attention to the president that much, but they
do watch television. And once they saw gays on television shows,
they were like, 'Okay, you know it's not that weird,'” Maher added.
