A music video released this week takes
aim at the anti-gay rhetoric of three former Republican candidates
for president: Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum.
The video for You Don't Know Me
from the three-man band Lido Beach starts off with Romney telling a
gay veteran in New Hampshire that he supports repeal of a law
allowing gay couples to marry.
“I support the repeal of the New
Hampshire law,” Romney told Bob Garon, 63 at the time, in late
2011. “I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. That's my
view.”
Others featured in the video include
Shirley Phelps-Roper of the Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist
Church and Texas Governor Rick Perry. (The video is embedded on this
page. Visit
our video library for more videos.)
“Our video addresses the backwards
and often hateful opponents of same-sex marriage,” openly straight
Lido Beach front-man Scott
Waldman said. “We watched as people in positions of power and
influence spread ignorance and hatred so we decided as a band to use
our platform to say something. After we saw the finished video it
felt more like we screamed back. It felt good. We will fight
intolerance forever.”
“Fuck tobacco and homophobia,” he
added in a tweet.
