Support for allowing gay and lesbian
couples to marry has increased dramatically since the state legalized
civil unions.
According to a Quinnipiac
University Poll released Monday, Colorado voters support same-sex
marriage by nearly a 2-1 margin.
Sixty-one percent of 1,298 registered
Colorado voters surveyed support marriage equality, while 33 percent
remain opposed.
Support among voters under 30 is nearly
universal (81%).
But a majority (58%) of Republicans
remain opposed.
Lawmakers last year approved a law
which recognizes gay couples with civil unions. Marriage was not an
option because of a 2006 voter-approved constitutional amendment
which defines marriage in the state as a heterosexual union.
Comparing Monday's poll to a Public
Policy Polling survey released in December of 2011, support for
marriage equality has increased dramatically – from a plurality
(47%) in 2011 to a large majority (61%) in 28 months.
