Citing a lack of support, a Louisiana
lawmaker on Tuesday pulled a proposed bill which sought to prohibit
workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender
identity.
Rep. Karen St. Germain, a Democrat,
told the House Civil Law and Procedure Committee that she was pulling
her bill from consideration.
“I have sadness, disappointment that
we have let it get this far, where there are still some issues about
people's right to work,” St. Germain said. “I will be back with
this bill next year.”
Business organizations and conservative
groups opposed the bill.
Gene Mills, president of the Christian
Louisiana Family Forum, told The
Times-Picayune that his group opposed the bill based on moral
grounds.
“I think it was about homosexual
affirmation,” he said.
St. Germain pulled the measure after
supporters had testified before the committee. Opponents did not get
a chance to speak on the bill.
