A World Vision board member has
resigned her post over the Evangelical Christian charity's decision
to withdraw its support for married gay employees.
Jacquelline Fuller, Google Inc.'s
director of corporate giving, told
the AP that she resigned Friday “as I disagreed with the
decision to exclude gay employees who marry.” Fuller said she
remains a “huge fan” of the group's work.
Immediately after World Vision
announced that it will hire married gay Christians, conservatives
opposed to gay rights criticized the move.
Franklin Graham, the son of evangelist
Billy Graham and the president of the charity Samaritan's Purse, said
that he was “sickened” by the news, while Bryan Fischer of the
Christian conservative American Family Association (AFA) said that
World Vision had abandoned “morality.”
The AP reported that several thousand
donors canceled their child sponsorships.
The charity reversed course within two
days, saying that it had “made a mistake” and was “brokenhearted
over the pain and confusion we have caused many of our friends, who
saw this decision as a reversal of our strong commitment to Biblical
authority.”
World Vision serves an estimated 100
million people in 100 countries.
