More Ohioans support gay marriage than
oppose it.
According to a Quinnipiac University
poll released Monday, 50 percent of those surveyed support marriage
equality, while 44 percent remain opposed.
The poll's findings are its highest yet
for marriage equality in the Buckeye State.
A December, 2012 Quinnipiac poll found
a plurality of voters opposed to such unions, 47 to 45 percent.
Opposition is highest among Republicans
(66%), though opposition has decreased 4 percentage points since
2012. A majority of independents (53%) and a large majority of
Democrats (67%) said they support such unions.
The poll also found a large majority
(71%) of young adults under 29 favor marriage equality. Twenty-eight
percent said they were opposed.
“Given that younger voters support
same sex marriage almost 3-1, it would seem to be just a matter of
time,” Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University
Polling Institute, said
in releasing the survey's findings.
