WWE wrestler John Cena has spoken in
support of Michael Sam's coming out.
Sam came out last week in interviews
with ESPN and The New York Times. The college football player
is a strong NFL draft prospect. If drafted, Sam would become the
NFL's first openly gay player.
In an appearance on Larry King Now,
Cena compared Sam to Darren Young, the WWE's first openly gay
wrestler.
“I'll say about Mr. Sam what I said
about Darren Young,” Cena told host Larry King. “Darren is a
wonderful professional in the ring. He's one of the hardest working
guys and one of the most technically skilled guys we have. His life
outside of the ring doesn't affect his workplace. And in Mr. Sam's
case, that's obviously the same situation.”
When asked what it was going to be like
for Sam in the NFL locker room, Cena answered: “People who can't
accept an individual for living their life the way they want –
'cause we only get one go-around in this thing – that's just
downright ignorance.”
“I think it takes one major step for
the dominoes to fall,” he said of recent gay rights gains. (The
