President Barack Obama on Sunday applauded Michael Sam for coming out before the NFL draft.

Sam is the 24-year-old Missouri Tigers football player and solid NFL draft prospect who came out gay last week. If drafted, Sam would become the NFL's first openly gay player.

“I really like the fact that Michael did it before the draft because his attitude was, 'You know what, I know who I am. I know I can play great football and judge me on the merits,'” Obama said of Sam during an interview that aired on TNT during Sunday's NBA All-Star Game.

First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden also congratulated Sam on Twitter.

“You're an inspiration to all of us, @MikeSamFootball. We couldn't be prouder of your courage both on and off the field. -mo,” Michelle Obama tweeted to her followers last week.
