Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore is
pushing for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution which would define
marriage as a heterosexual union.
“The moral foundation of our country
is under attack,” Moore told the AP.
Moore has written to all 50 governors
urging them to get their legislatures to call for a constitutional
convention to approve the marriage amendment.
Moore said he decided to act because
“government has become oppressive, and judges are warping the law.
He insisted that “a great majority of
the American people want to hold to the definition that a marriage is
between a man and a woman.”
The controversial judge said a
states-led approach was more likely to succeed because Congress
“can't get along or agree on anything.”
Thirty-four states must unite for a
convention to be called. Currently, 17 states allow gay couples to
