Actor-comedian Lily Tomlin and Jane
Wagner married on New Year's Eve.
In speculating about the nuptials,
Tomlin had said that the wedding, 42 years in the making, would be a
“beneath the radar” affair.
And it was. The only trace of it
happening was a tiny mention by gossip columnist Liz Smith.
“And my longtime friends, Lily Tomlin
and her love, the writer Jane Wagner, got married on the eve of 2014.
… My wish is that their happiness will be as great as their
combined talents,” Smith
wrote.
At a pre-Emmy event held in September,
Tomlin told E! Online that the fall of California's Proposition 8 got
the couple thinking about marriage.
“No rings, no bridal dresses,” she
said. “Maybe we'll be dressed like chickens.”
In 2006, Tomlin told gay weekly Metro
Weekly that it was love at first sight: “Frankly, I was
pretty taken with her as soon as I saw her. We just sort of clicked.
We became a couple right away.”
Tomlin and Wagner, a writer, have
collaborated on various projects.
