A conservative group in Indiana warns
in a flier distributed to churches that schoolchildren would be
harmed if Indiana does not ban gay marriage.
Advance America's flier includes “four
dangers of same-sex marriage.”
“Beginning in kindergarten, schools
would be required to teach children that homosexual marriages are
normal and acceptable and the same as heterosexual marriages,” the
flier states.
“It is part of the homosexual
agenda,” Advance America founder Eric Miller told ABC affiliate
RTV6.
Other dangers include the prosecution
of clergy members, allowing “men who dress as women” legal access
to women's restrooms, and fines for Christian businesses that refuse
to serve gay couples.
The flier urges voters to call their
legislators and ask them to vote for HJR-6, the proposed
constitutional amendment which would prohibit the state from
recognizing any union other than a heterosexual marriage. A needed
second vote before heading to voters in November is expected to take
place early next year.
Jennifer Drobac, a family law professor
at the Indiana University McKinney School of Law, criticized the
flier.
“This flier is designed to demonize
and make same-sex couples less worthy than other couples,” Drobac
said. “It is designed to put fear into the hearts and minds of
Hoosiers so they would vote against the civil rights of same-sex
couples and their families.”
