Gavin Hood, the director of Ender's
Game, says he disagrees with Orson Scott Card's views on gay
marriage.
The group Geeks OUT has been calling
for a boycott of the film over Card's anti-gay views and his support
of groups that oppose gay marriage.
Until recently, Card, who wrote the
book the film is based on, was a board member of the National
Organization for Marriage (NOM), the nation's most vociferous
opponent of marriage equality.
After the Supreme Court ruled on the
issue in two cases, Card pleaded for Geeks OUT to drop their boycott.
“Now it will be interesting to see
whether the victorious proponents of gay marriage will show tolerance
toward those who disagreed with them when the issue was still in
dispute,” he wrote.
But the group rejected
the plea, saying that nothing is “more democratic and tolerant
than a consumer boycott, rooted in the ideas of free market
accountability.”
“A lot of journalists have been
saying to me, you know the movie is obviously very different to what
Orson Scott Card's current political views are on the issue of gay
rights,” Hood told TotalFilm.com. “I feel strongly the same, he
and I happen to hold opposite points of views on this issue.”
Ender's Game “seems to be at
odds with his views now.”
“I think everyone will agree that one
of the great things about the book is its themes of compassion and
tolerance to the 'other.' It's all about you cannot understand
somebody until you've walked in their shoes, and you must in order to
