Senator-elect Cory Booker, the current
Democratic mayor of Newark, New Jersey, plans to marry several gay
and lesbian couples at the stroke of midnight on Monday.
According
to BuzzFeed, Booker will marry the couples in the first floor
rotunda of Newark City Hall.
While the New Jersey Supreme Court has
agreed to hear an appeal to a lower court's order legalizing gay
marriage in New Jersey, it has yet to weigh in on a request to delay
Monday's implementation of the ruling.
At least 10 couples and their families
are preparing to participate in Monday's event.
Several
other cities also began issuing marriage licenses to gay couples on
Friday in anticipation of Monday's start.
On Wednesday, Booker, a strong
supporter of marriage equality, won a special election to represent
New Jersey in the U.S. Senate.
