Sir Elton John and David Furnish are
planning to marry.
The couple, together 20 years, are
raising two children and entered a UK civil partnership in 2005.
Appearing Tuesday on ABC's Jimmy
Kimmel Live, host Jimmy Kimmel jokingly congratulated John on
being gay.
“Thank you very much. It was hard,”
John replied. “And it still is.”
“Are you going to take advantage of
the new laws and get married?” Kimmel asked.
“Yeah, we will do next May, when it
comes out. I mean if those laws are being made for people like us
who 30, 40 years ago, you know, it was very hard to even come out of
the closet. In England, we've had the civil partnership, which we
did in 2005. And that made a huge difference; a commitment to your
relationship. I didn't think it would, but it did. And it really
helped our relationship. And if the laws are going to help us again,
then as a famous gay couple we will do it. It's our duty to do it,
to make sure everyone knows that this is something that is a gift
from, you know, that we never dreamed we would get.”
John added that he didn't want a
“flashy” wedding. (The video is embedded on this page. Visit
