Feminist, journalist and political
activist Gloria Steinem presented Jennifer Lopez with the Human
Rights Campaign's (HRC) 2013 Ally for Equality Award at the group's
National Dinner on Saturday in Washington, DC.
In introducing Lopez, Steinem thanked
her for “understanding that families are about content not form and
human beings are linked not ranked,” a reference to Lopez's
participation in the ABC Family drama The Fosters – the
first primetime cable show to revolve around a two-mom family.
“I'm honored to be receiving the Ally
for Equality Award,” Lopez told the more than 3,400 attendees. “I'm
appreciative. I'm humbled. But you know what I've been thinking
about is that rather than just being an honor for me or the other
honorees, it's a celebration of us. Of what we can accomplish when
we throw fear out the window and opt to do what we know in our hearts
is right.”
Lopez added that “there is nothing
that I've been prouder of in my career than producing The
