Some reactions to Thursday's historic
California Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality. The court's
decision overturns a 2000 voter-approved ban on gay marriage. This
paves the way for gay marriage in the nation's most populous state.
“At the end of the day, this is about
real people and their lives. This is about their families. It
doesn't get much more personal than this. ...This is an
extraordinary day. This an extraordinary moment,” said San
Francisco Mayor Gavin Newson, who had given out gay marriage licenses
in 2004.
“I respect the court's decision and
as governor, I will uphold its ruling,” said California Governor
Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has vetoed previous gay marriage
legislation.
“Essentially, this boils down to
love. We love each other. We now have equal rights under the law...
We're going to get married. No Tupperware, please,” said Robin
Tyler, a plaintiff in the case along with her partner Diane Olson.
“What an outrage,” said Focus on
the Family Chairman James Dobson, who urged passage of a
constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.
“...an historical turning point for
families in California and across the nation. [The California
Supreme Court has] struck down any notion that some families are less
worthy of full legal recognition than others,” said PFLAG Executive
Director Jody M. Huckaby.
“When I first heard the news I felt
the same way I did when it happened here [Massachusetts], it brought
tears to my eyes,” said OUTTAKEonline.com CEO Charlotte Robinson ,
who is currently working on a documentary on gay marriage.
