Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg officiated at the
wedding of a second gay couple last Sunday.
According to The
New York Times, Ginsburg presided at the marriage of food
columnist and cookbook author David Hagedorn and National Weather
Service communications director Michael Widomski.
On September 1, Ginsburg, 80, officiated the marriage of Kennedy
Center President Michael Kaiser and economist John Roberts.
Both weddings were held in the District of Columbia, which
legalized such unions in 2009.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Ginsburg said of
the first ceremony: “I think it will be one more statement that
people who love each other and want to live together should be able
to enjoy the blessings and the strife in the marriage relationship.”
Conservatives have criticized Ginsburg. Matt
Barber of Liberty Counsel said that she had brought “shame on
America” and the Supreme Court.
Hagedorn and Widomski, the Times reported, married on the
roof of Fiola restaurant in Washington in front of 100 guests.
Ginsburg told the couple that she hoped that their “universal”
love would make them “magically more wiser and richer in
experience, happier than either would be alone.”
The men, both in their early 50s, first met at a party in 1997 and
developed a deep friendship that slowly grew into love. They got
engaged on December 7. Widomski said that a conversation over the
Supreme Court taking up a challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act
(DOMA) inspired him to get down on one knee and propose.
