Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage
(NOM), on Saturday questioned Liz Cheney's claim that she's not
“pro-gay marriage.”
Cheney, the daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney,
announced last month that she will be challenging Wyoming Senator
Mike Enzi in the Republican primary. Dick Cheney has previously said
that he supports the marriage of his daughter Mary Cheney, who is
openly gay.
“I am strongly pro-life and I am not pro-gay marriage,” Cheney
said in a statement posted on her website. “I believe the issue of
marriage must be decided by the states, and by the people in the
states, not by judges and not even by legislators, but by the people
themselves.”
Brown questioned Cheney's assertion in a blog post.
“Liz Cheney now says she is not 'pro gay marriage', but she has
long opposed a constitutional amendment to protect marriage as the
union of one man and woman,” Brown
said. “If she truly supported protecting marriage, she would
change her position and support both a Wyoming constitutional
amendment and federal amendment to protect marriage. Luckily, there
is a candidate in this race who has done more than give lip service
to traditional marriage: Mike Enzi. He not only supported a marriage
amendment, but actually co sponsored it.”
