Actor George Takei will be in Miami to receive the 2013 National
Leadership Award at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force's 17th
Annual Miami Recognition Dinner to take place on Saturday, November
9.
“I am deeply honored to be recognized by this wonderful
organization that has been fighting for LGBT equality for the past
four decades,” Takei said in a statement given to the AP. “It is
a privilege to be part of an event like the 17th Annual
Miami Recognition Dinner that raises money for multiple organizations
serving our community.
Tickets for the event start at $250 and can be purchased at
MiamiRecognitionDinner.org.
On Tuesday, Takei, who married his husband Brad Altman in 2008,
criticized the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for not taking a
stronger stand against Russia's anti-gay law, passage of which
prompted calls for a boycott of the Winter Olympics to be held next
year in Sochi.
“The president of the IOC, Jacques Rogge, is a weak and a
spineless person,” Takei
said on Sirius XM's The Agenda. “He said that he's talked to
the Russian government and they won't relent. So, he's thrown up his
