Liberty Counsel, the law firm and ministry that provides legal
assistance to Christians, posted as its Facebook cover an image
citing Leviticus 20:13.
The verse has been interpreted by Jews and Christians as a
prohibition against gay sex.
“If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both
of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to
death; their blood shall be upon them.”
The image posted by the group, which has since been taken down,
included stick figures of a man and a woman. The caption “One Man
One Woman” hangs above the figures and the caption “Leviticus
20:13” below them.
Writing at Right Wing Watch, a project of People for the American
Way, Brian
Tashman responded: “We are eagerly awaiting Liberty
Counsel's other Facebook images on stoning women who had sex before
marriage; adulterers; kids who curse their parents; blasphemers;
sorcerers; Sabbath-breakers and false prophets.”
Liberty Counsel is headed by Mathew Staver, who founded it with
his wife, Anita, in 1989.
