Author David Sedaris says he lives for
cabler Logo's RuPaul's Drag Race.
Sedaris, who is promoting his latest
collection of humorous essays, Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls,
discussed his love for the reality show in great detail on BBC radio
4.
“RuPaul is an American drag queen,
probably the most famous American drag queen, deservedly so,”
Sedaris
said. “She's just … really, really beautiful.”
“I don't watch shows like that
normally. Like I wasn't very familiar with that whole formula. You
know, someone told me about a show later called Face Off,
where people who do makeup for horror movies compete. But they don't
have the personality that a drag queen has.”
Drag queens “just do not give a damn
what anyone thinks of them. I mean, anyone outside of their
audience. But while the rest of the gay world is so busy trying to
fit in, drag queens they're like clowns. I mean, fantastic clowns.
My boyfriend every now and then will say, 'I don't know that I feel
right watching this,' because their ideals of femininity are so
exaggerated. Like there's not a drag queen who decides she's going
to look like [German Prime Minister] Angela Merkel. They all go more
toward Pamela Anderson.”
“But I think if you think about it
too hard, then you're just going to be missing out on the fun of it.
I live for this show. I absolutely live for it.”
