A recently released video shows
behind-the-scenes footage of the weddings of the two gay couples who
challenged the constitutionality of Proposition 8.
The 5-minute video produced by the
American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER), the group formed
specifically to challenge California's now ended gay marriage ban,
begins on a day last month four-and-a-half years after voters
approved Proposition 8. It's of course the day that the Supreme
Court handed down its ruling paving the way for same-sex marriages to
resume in California.
During a press conference on the steps
of the Supreme Court, Paul Katami says: “Today is a good day. It's
the day I finally get to look at the man that I love and finally say,
'Will you please marry me?'”
A smiling Jeff Zarillo offers a big
smile in return and the pair share a kiss.
Plaintiff Kris Perry is asked by a
reporter, “What's next?”
Perry smiles, then answers, “We're
getting married. That's what's next.”
Perry and Sandy Stier marry two days
later at San Francisco City Hall in a ceremony officiated by Attorney
General Kamala Harris. 90 minutes later, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio
Villaraigosa presides over the Los Angeles City Hall wedding of
Katami and Zarrillo.
Harris declares Perry and Stier
“spouses for life,” while Villaraigosa says to the men, “Let me
pronounce you married.” (The video is embedded on this page.
