Kansas Rep. Tim Huelskamp, a
Republican, on Monday claimed that a Supreme Court ruling on gay
marriage effectively legalized polygamy.
Last month, the Supreme Court released
two decisions related to gay nuptials. One gutted the Defense of
Marriage Act (DOMA), while the second led to the end of Proposition
8.
Huelskamp's immediate reaction was to
propose a federal amendment defining marriage as a heterosexual
union. The bill was introduced in the House with 28 Republican
co-sponsors.

During an appearance on Janet Mefferd's
radio show, Huelskamp called Justice Anthony Kennedy's decision on
DOMA “outrageous.”
“If you're writing for the Left and
you're not gonna follow the Constitution you have to make it up as
you go along so you inject name-calling into a constitutional
decision,” Huelskamp
said. “I mean that's an outrageous decision.”
He went on to criticize Chief Justice
John Roberts' ruling on Proposition 8 as “crazy.”
“What's the impact on our children?
That's what the Left doesn't care about,” he said. “Just because
two or three adults desire one thing that doesn't mean it's best for
our children.”
Huelskamp argued that the DOMA decision
effectively allows parents to marry their same-gender children,
adding that “polygamy should be allowed under this decision.”
