House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on
Sunday said that she's optimistic that the remaining 37 states will
legalize gay marriage in the next 5 years.
Pelosi discussed this week's historic
Supreme Court rulings on marriage with Meet the Press' David Gregory.
Gregory asked whether recognition in
all states over the next 5 years was an achievable goal.
“Well, first of all, let's savor the
victory,” Pelosi answered. “None of us was surprised that the
Supreme Court ruled the way they did. Nonetheless, it was a relief
to have it over. Both in terms of the repeal of sections of DOMA as
well as the sending Proposition 8 back to where it belongs. We still
have work to do.”
“I'm optimistic that the momentum is
with ending discrimination.”
“Five years is achievable, you
think?” Gregory asked a second time.
“Well, I would certainly hope so. Of
course, I've been in this, shall we say crusade, for a long time.
And to see the pace with which it has accelerated in the past few
years is very encouraging,” she answered.
“Let's hope it's even sooner than
that,” she
added.
