Singer Rufus Wainwright says his
husband Jorn Weisbrodt is “very happy” about this week's ruling
striking down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
Wainwright and Weisbrodt, who are
raising their daughter Viva Katherine Wainwright, married last year
in New York.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court gutted
the section of DOMA that prohibited federal agencies from recognizing
the legal marriages of gay and lesbian couples.
“My husband is very happy” about
the ruling, Wainwright said during an appearance on HuffPost Live.
“Because he's German. And so down the line, you know, he will be
able to become an American citizen.”
However, Wainwright said that he saw
the ruling as “bittersweet” when viewed alongside Tuesday's
decision striking down a key part of the landmark Voting Rights Act.
“But I am very, very happy about [the
DOMA decision],” he added. (The video is embedded on this page.
