Brian Brown, president of the National
Organization for Marriage (NOM), is predicting victory for his side
in “Roe decision for marriage.”
The Supreme Court on Wednesday is
expected to hand down rulings in two cases related to gay marriage.
The cases, which were heard by the justices in March, challenge the
constitutionality of Proposition 8, California's gay marriage ban,
and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which prohibits federal
agencies from recognizing the legal marriages of gay and lesbian
couples.
Brown, who leads the nation's most
vociferous group opposed to marriage equality, told the National
Review Online's
Betsy Woodruff that he's confident of a win at the Supreme Court.
“We're thinking we're going to win,”
Brown said. “And I think that even the other side realizes that
they're not going to get the decision they want.”
“This is like the life movement
winning Roe. This is the Roe decision for marriage.
This is not trying to nibble at the edges; this is trying to claim
that there is a Constitutional right to redefine marriage. If they
lose that, then the highest court in the land will be saying one of
their key arguments is wrong, and that will have a big, big, big
impact.”
