Singer Lady Gaga on Monday called on
the Supreme Court to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA),
the 1996 law which prevents federal agencies from recognizing the
legal marriages of gay and lesbian couples.
“Let's go DOMA,” Lady
Gaga tweeted to her more than 38 million followers. “Supreme
Court lets make history & stand for MARRIAGE EQUALITY!
#GetItDoneThisWeek #TheWholeWorldIsWatching. Time to bring DOMA to
the floor. #DoItNow #WeAreEqual #WeAreHuman
#WeAreValuableToSociety.”
She continued on Tuesday: “Overturn
The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) today. It is unconstitutional.
Or will the Supreme Court continue to discriminate against LGBTs.”
“Who will be our Abe Lincoln today?
Who will make the choice of FREEDOM FOR ALL. #SCOTUS.”
The 27-year-old Lady Gaga has been a
vocal supporter of gay rights and strongly supported repeal of “Don't
Ask, Don't Tell,” the military policy which prevented gay troops
from serving openly.
The Supreme Court is expected this week
to rule on two cases related to marriage equality.
