Activists on Thursday vowed to return
to the ballot box next year to overturn Proposition 8, California's
gay marriage ban, if the Supreme Court upholds its constitutionality
in a decision expected next week.
“If we lose, we're going to fight
like hell to make sure we return marriage equality in California in
2014,” Adam Bink, director of online programs for progressive group
the Courage Campaign, is quoted as saying by The Los Angeles
Times.
Bink make his remarks during the
opening day of Netroots Nation, the annual gathering of liberal
bloggers taking place through Saturday in San Jose, California.
The
landmark case Hollingsworth v. Perry was filed in 2009
and made its way to the Supreme Court in March. With a week left in
the current term, the court is widely expected to rule on the case
sometime next week.
In 2010, Courage Campaign initially
backed an effort to put a referendum on the ballot that sought to
repeal Proposition 8. However, other groups, including Equality
California, the state's largest LGBT rights advocate, said that they
would prefer to wait for the court's ruling before committing to a
repeal campaign.
