Puerto Rico's most famous openly gay
singer on Wednesday called on lawmakers to approve a gay rights law.
Ricky Martin called for House members to
approve bill No. 238, which seeks to prohibit discrimination based on
sexual orientation and gender identity. The measure cleared the
Puerto Rican Senate last week but a group of lawmakers in the lower
chamber came out against it on Monday.
“The rights of homosexual people are
human rights and human rights are for everyone,” Martin said in the
letter released by his representative in San Juan.
He added that lawmakers have a
responsibility to end the violence, hatred and discrimination against
the LGBT community.
In a tweet to his nearly 9 million
followers, Martin urged fans to contact five representatives on
Facebook about the proposed bill.
“Tomorrow they'll vote and we have to
mobilize,” he
said in Spanish.
