Carolyn Moos, Jason Collins'
ex-fiancee, says she wishes him well.
Moos and Collins dated for 8 years and
a planned wedding was called off in 2009. The 34-year-old model and
personal trainer also played basketball professionally in the WNBA.
Collins, an NBA free agent, on Monday
announced he's gay, making him the U.S.'s first openly gay
professional player.
In an appearance on CNN's Piers
Morgan Tonight, Moos said Collins called her last week with the
news.
“He actually called this past
weekend. And we spoke a couple times on Monday,” Moos said.
“I really care a lot about Jason.
He's a great individual. We had incredible moments together. And,
you know, I want him to be happy, and I want him to have a wonderful
future,” Moos said.
“We have to be accepting. And I
certainly am. You know, I'm straight, I definitely will have a
husband at some point.”
When Morgan asked, “Did he apologize
to you?” Moos didn't give a straight answer.
“I think he's in the process of
taking ownership of the here and now, which is actually coming out.
That can be very, I assume, overwhelming. You know, I did invest 8
years in our relationship. … I had to rewrite the script. And I
still am rewriting it. And it's been very challenging. That's
hopefully a natural progression for him to look at things from all
different angles.” (The video is embedded on this page. Visit
