RNC Draft Resolution Would Affirm GOP's Opposition To Gay Marriage

The Republican National Committee's (RNC) Resolution Committee is expected to consider a proposed resolution affirming the GOP's opposition to gay marriage.

The committee opened its spring meeting on Thursday.

National Committeewoman from Oklahoma Carolyn McLarty is the chief sponsor of the proposal, which is part of a package of resolutions that aim to “re-affirm conservative principles” in the Republican Party.

“[T]he Republican National Committee affirms its support for marriage as the union of one man and one woman, and as the optimum environment in which to raise healthy children for the future of America,” the “Resolution for Marriage and Children 2013” reads. “And be it further resolved, the Republican National Committee implores the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold the sanctity of marriage in its rulings on California's Proposition 8 and the Federal Defense of Marriage Act.”

The resolution was denounced by Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry, a group of mostly Republicans who support marriage equality.

“As young conservatives, we call on the members of the Republican National Committee to dismiss this resolution out of hand and save the Party from further marginalization,” the group said in a letter to the RNC. “Instead, we should look to the leadership of elected leaders like Senators [Rob] Portman and [Mark] Kirk and Representatives [Ilena] Ros- Lehtinen and [Richard] Hanna who are already leading the way to a stronger and more consistent conservative movement.”
