Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe on
Wednesday gave his advice to a supposedly gay NFL player considering
coming out.
Last week, CBS Sports reported that a
gay professional football player was considering making his sexual
orientation public.
Appearing on CNN's Anderson Cooper
360, Kluwe, a strong supporter of LGBT rights, told host Anderson
Cooper that “in the end” an openly gay player would be “fine.”
“I think there would be support in
the locker room,” Kluwe said. “There would probably be a couple
of guys who wouldn't get it, but that's just like society at large.
You know, there are people who will never get it. You pretty much
just have to wait for them to grow old and die off. I think the
players would be okay with it. The fans would probably take a little
while to come around to it. But at the end of the day, I think it
would be fine.”
On that rumored coming out, Kluwe
advised: “Just stay true to yourself and realize that you have
allies within the league and outside of the league. Like I said
earlier, there are always going to be people who don't get it but
more and more people are getting it and realizing that this is a
matter of being free to live your own life without the oppression of
someone else.” (The video is embedded on this page. Visit
