Olympian Megan Rapinoe says she never
worried about losing sponsors over her sexual orientation.
The 27-year-old Rapinoe scored three
goals and four assists for the U.S. women's soccer team at the 2012
Summer Olympics held in London, England.
She announced her sexual orientation
shortly before heading to the Olympics in an interview with gay
glossy Out, making her one of fewer than two dozen openly gay athletes to compete in the summer
Olympics.
In an
interview with lesbian glossy Curve,
Rapinoe said never considered losing sponsors in deciding whether to
come out.
“I had the
attitude that 'This is who I am … so if you don't like it, then
it's not my concern,'” she said. “My friends, family, and team
were all accepting. As for sponsors, it never crossed my mind. Nike
is my biggest supporter and I wasn't concerned about that at all. If
a company doesn't want to support me or sponsor me, then I don't want
to work with that company or support them. … [Being afraid to lose
sponsors] implies that there is something wrong, and there's not.”
