Bryan Fischer of the Christian
conservative American Family Association (AFA) has claimed that Tim
Tebow has put his eternal salvation in jeopardy over his decision to
cancel a speaking appearance at an anti-gay church.
Tebow, the 25-year-old NFL quarterback
known for sharing his Christian faith with fans, had agreed to speak
at First Baptist Church of Dallas, the megachurch lead by Robert
Jeffress.
Right Wing Watch has documented
Jeffress as describing “gay and lesbians as 'perverse,'
'miserable'
and 'abnormal'
people who engage in an 'unnatural'
and 'filthy
practice' that will lead to the 'implosion
of our country.' Jeffress argues that the gay community employs
Chinese 'brainwashing
techniques' in order to have homosexuality 'crammed
down our throats.'”
In a series of tweets, Tebow announced
that he was backing out of the gig.
“While I was looking forward to
sharing a message of hope and Christ's unconditional love with the
faithful members of the historic First Baptist Church of Dallas in
April, due to new information that has been brought to my attention,
I have decided to cancel my upcoming appearance. I will continue to
use the platform God has blessed me with to bring Faith, Hope and
Love to all those needing a brighter day. Thank you for all your
love and support. God Bless!”
In
a column published Thursday, Fischer said Tebow has put his
eternal salvation in jeopardy.
And during his Focal Point radio
program, he accused Tebow of caving to the “bigoted bullies at Big
Gay.”
“Homosexual activists,” Fischer
said, now have “another scalp to hang on the wall; they got another
