Social conservative Michael Brown has
criticized the argument that anti-gay activists might have a personal
stake in the issue.
Brown, the author of A Queer Thing
Happened To America: And What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been and
the host of the radio program The Line of Fire, appeared
Monday on The David Pakman Show to discuss a recent Town
Hall article in which he argues that conservatives should not
abandon their battle against gay marriage.
“I oppose two men marrying or two
women marrying because I believe it's wrong,” Brown said in
defending his opposition. “I believe it's in the worst interest of
society, children, families and contrary to God's will. If society
shifted in such a way that same-sex marriage was the law of the land,
I'd still say it's wrong and I would still work for what I feel is
right.”
The program derailed when Pakman asked
Brown his thoughts on anti-gay activists and politicians who later
turned out to be gay themselves.
“Well, I think that's their issue.
As someone that's been heterosexual from the first moment of any
sexual romantic thoughts and has never had to deal with a homosexual
thought in my life, the more I hear those things, the more it makes
me wonder what's going on in that person's life. You know I got gay
activists that constantly focus on what I write, does that mean that
they like me secretly? Or perhaps because you take a certain stand
on these issues I should assume that you're a closet conservative
Christian? I mean it's such a bizarre way of thinking but when I
read those pathetic thoughts I think what's going on with these
people, don't they have something better to do?”
“It's the standard gay argument that
when someone opposes these things, they must have some private issue.
Which is really a pathetic [inaudible]. Can't someone understand
that I have an issue with two men marrying or two women marrying?
Can't someone understand that the world's best mommy is not a good
daddy. Can't people understand that there are biblical convictions
that say God made us a certain way for a certain reason?” (The
