Singer Janet Jackson has recorded a new
video for amfAR, the nonprofit started by the late Elizabeth Taylor
dedicated to the support of AIDS research, HIV prevention, treatment
education and public policy.
In the 30-second video released on
World AIDS Day, Jackson reminds viewers that AIDS is not over.
“More than a million Americans are
living with HIV. And one in five of them don't even know they are
infected,” Jackson says. “So please get tested.”
“And if you're HIV-positive, get
treated. Support the research, it's our only hope in finding a
cure.”
“Let's end AIDS together,” she
adds. (The video is embedded on this page. Visit
our video library for more videos.)
The 46-year-old Jackson also joined
amfAR's Mathilde Krim, Ph.D. in penning a CNN op-ed.
“While the AIDS research and activist
communities continue to celebrate some major breakthroughs during the
past few years, we continue to struggle with an epidemic in the
United States that grows unabated,” they
wrote.
“And while everyone is at risk and
should know their status, data tell us that communities of color –
particularly black women and young, black gay, bisexual and other men
who have sex with men – are disproportionately affected by the
virus. If we're going to create an AIDS-free generation here at
home, we need to start investing in resources that will curb the
epidemic among these populations.”
