British actor Sir Ian McKellen has recorded a video calling on New Zealand to legalize gay marriage.

Sir Ian is known for playing Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, movies which were filmed in New Zealand.

In a 60-second video recorded for the New Zealand Green Party, McKellen, who has previously been linked romantically to at least one New Zealander, Nick Cuthell, hinted that he may use the new law himself.

“Ever since New Zealand gave women the vote before any other country in the world, the rest of the world has looked at New Zealand for social advance,” McKellen said. “And here we are again. And this time at the exciting prospect of possibility of people of the same gender being able to get married and join the rest of the population.”

“I hope that by the time I get back to Middle Earth I might even be able to get married,” he added in a whisper. “Good luck.” (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)

Debate on a gay marriage bill is expected to resume in March after a period of public input.
